TotalEnergies Reports Major Offshore Oil Discovery in Republic of Congo, Estimating Over 100 Million Barrels of Recoverable Resources
TotalEnergies has announced the discovery of hydrocarbons in the Republic of the Congo as part of its ongoing drilling campaign to expand the Moho offshore field, a key deepwater production hub in the country.
The company reported that drilling activities identified a hydrocarbon column of approximately 160 metres, indicating significant resource potential in the area.
Based on preliminary assessments, TotalEnergies estimates that the combined Moho G and Moho H discoveries could contain more than 100 million barrels of recoverable resources, according to information reported by Reuters.
QatarEnergy Participation and Partnership Structure
QatarEnergy, which holds a 15% stake in TotalEnergies E&P Congo (TEPC), also confirmed the discovery and highlighted its participation in the project.
The company is a shareholder in TEPC, the operator of the Moho licence, and continues to expand its upstream footprint across Africa through strategic partnerships.
Under the production-sharing framework with the Congolese government, the Moho offshore project involves multiple stakeholders.
TEPC’s current equity structure includes TotalEnergies as operator, alongside partners including QatarEnergy, Trident Energy, and the national oil company Société Nationale des Pétroles du Congo.
Previous agreements related to offshore exploration licences, including the Nzombo block, reflect a broader expansion of international participation in the country’s upstream oil sector.
QatarEnergy’s President and CEO, Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, welcomed the discovery, stating that it strengthens the company’s growing global exploration portfolio.
He added that QatarEnergy looks forward to continued collaboration with TotalEnergies and the Congolese government in developing the newly identified resources.
Moho Offshore Field and Development Outlook
The Moho deep offshore field, located approximately 80 kilometres offshore Pointe-Noire, currently produces around 90,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. Production is supported by multiple floating production units operated by TotalEnergies.
The newly discovered Moho G and Moho H resources are expected to be developed as tie-backs to existing infrastructure, enabling a shorter development cycle and improved project economics.
According to TotalEnergies Exploration Senior Vice-President Nicola Mavilla, the proximity of the discoveries to existing production facilities will allow for a cost-efficient and accelerated development pathway.
He noted that leveraging existing offshore infrastructure is expected to reduce capital requirements and shorten the time to first production, reinforcing the strategic value of the Moho complex within the company’s deepwater portfolio.
