Angola Faces Fuel Supply Crisis as Govt Moves to Address Shortages

Angola Faces Worrying Fuel Shortage as Rising Consumption Puts Pressure on Sonangol

Angola is facing a fuel supply shortage, with rising domestic consumption putting increasing pressure on the country’s petroleum distribution system and state-owned oil company Sonangol.

Minister of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas Diamantino Azevedo acknowledged the situation, describing the shortage as a matter of concern.

The government is working with Sonangol to address supply constraints and restore more stable fuel availability across the country.

Rising consumption adds pressure

According to the minister, the current shortage is linked largely to increased fuel consumption, which has placed additional pressure on supply and distribution.

The situation highlights a growing challenge for Angola, one of Africa’s major oil producers, as domestic demand for refined petroleum products continues to increase.

Fuel shortages can have wider economic consequences, affecting transport operators, businesses, households and industries that rely heavily on diesel and petrol.

Sonangol has been tasked with helping address the immediate supply constraints and ensuring fuel reaches the affected markets.

The government’s response comes as Angola continues efforts to strengthen its downstream petroleum sector and reduce its dependence on imported refined products.

The country has been investing in refinery capacity, including the Cabinda refinery, while advancing larger projects intended to increase domestic refining and improve energy security.

Refining capacity remains strategic

Angola’s fuel shortage underscores the importance of expanding domestic refining capacity.

Although the country produces significant volumes of crude oil, limited refining capacity has historically forced it to rely on imported petroleum products.

Increasing local refining capacity would help reduce exposure to international fuel prices, shipping costs and external supply disruptions while improving the security of domestic fuel supplies.

The government is therefore pursuing a broader downstream strategy aimed at increasing refining capacity and strengthening storage and distribution infrastructure.

For now, however, authorities face the immediate challenge of restoring adequate fuel supplies as consumption continues to rise.

The latest situation highlights the need for Angola to accelerate investments across its petroleum value chain, ensuring that its position as a major crude oil producer translates into a more secure and reliable domestic fuel supply.
