Petrobras Enters Talks for Four Offshore Oil and Gas Blocks in Ghana’s Keta Basin
Brazilian state-owned energy company Petrobras is expanding its exploration footprint in West Africa after receiving approval to negotiate contracts for four offshore blocks in Ghana’s Keta Basin.
Ghana’s Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has approved Petrobras’ application, allowing the company to enter direct negotiations over exploration contracts for the blocks.
The move is part of Petrobras’ strategy to replenish its oil and gas reserves by pursuing new exploration frontiers both in Brazil and internationally.
Petrobras’ Executive Director for Exploration and Production, Sylvia Anjos, said the geological characteristics of the Keta Basin are similar to those of Brazil’s Equatorial Margin, which the company considers a major exploration frontier.
Ghana is also becoming part of a broader African exploration strategy for Petrobras. The company is assessing opportunities in São Tomé and Príncipe, Namibia, Côte d’Ivoire and South Africa, as it seeks to diversify its international exploration portfolio.
The Ghana opportunity remains at an early stage, with contract negotiations still to be concluded.
However, securing exploration rights could give Petrobras access to a new offshore frontier and strengthen Ghana’s position as an attractive destination for international oil and gas investment.
For Petrobras, the potential entry into the Keta Basin represents another step in its efforts to build future reserves and sustain long-term production growth beyond its core Brazilian operations.
