Africa Energy Bank Set for November 2026 Launch to Boost Financing for African Energy Projects
The Africa Energy Bank (AEB) is expected to launch in November 2026, marking a major step towards establishing a dedicated African financing institution for energy development.
African Energy Chamber (AEC) Executive Chairman NJ Ayuk said the African Petroleum Producers’ Organization (APPO) and African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) are preparing to bring the institution into operation.
Speaking in Luanda, Angola, Ayuk said he had been informed that the two institutions were targeting a November launch for the AEB.
The bank is expected to provide a dedicated financing platform for African oil and gas projects at a time when access to international capital for the sector remains challenging.
Its establishment is also intended to help African producers mobilise more domestic and regional capital for energy projects and reduce reliance on external sources of financing.
APPO Secretary General Farid Ghezali said the bank could play an important role in transforming Africa’s natural resources into bankable projects and mobilising investment for the continent’s development.
“The Africa Energy Bank can help mobilize capital, support strategic projects and finance Africa’s development,” Ghezali said.
The planned launch follows progress made by APPO and its partners towards establishing the institution. At an APPO Executive Board meeting in Côte d’Ivoire in July, officials said the minimum requirements needed to launch the bank had been met.
The AEB is expected to strengthen Africa’s capacity to finance energy infrastructure and projects, particularly as the continent seeks to expand energy access, develop its hydrocarbon resources and attract investment into its broader energy sector.
Its launch would represent a significant development in Africa’s efforts to build stronger regional financial mechanisms capable of supporting the continent’s energy ambitions.
