MPOPO Gold Targets 200 Kilograms of Annual Gold Production in Angola by 2028
Angolan gold producer MPOPO Gold is stepping up efforts to expand production, with the company targeting annual output of between 150 and 200 kilograms of gold under its 2027–2028 strategic plan.
The strategy includes completing the second phase of its industrial processing plant, updating its geological model, strengthening mine planning and introducing measures to improve production recovery.
The company also plans to intensify efforts to combat illegal mining in its areas of operation.
The plans were presented by Adalgisa Adolfo, head of MPOPO Gold’s Technical Geology Department, during the 13th meeting of the Advisory Council of Angola’s Ministry of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas.
Adolfo highlighted progress made in geological prospecting, exploration and mining activities in Huíla and Cunene provinces, noting that geological studies have identified exploration targets with significant mineral potential.
A key objective of the company’s new strategy is to increase metallurgical recovery to between 65% and 80%, while raising annual gold production to an estimated 150–200 kilograms.
MPOPO Gold is also working to complete the second phase of its processing plant, which is expected to support higher production as the company expands its mining activities.
However, the company continues to face several operational challenges, including heavy rainfall, water accumulation at mining fronts, illegal mining and logistical constraints.
MPOPO Gold says its strategy is aimed at addressing these constraints while improving the efficiency and sustainability of its operations.
Adolfo described the sustainable development of Angola’s gold sector as a strategic opportunity to convert the country’s geological potential into greater economic value and growth.
Expanding Angola’s gold industry
MPOPO Gold is an Angolan company focused on the research, prospecting and exploration of gold, with operations in Huíla and Cunene.
The company was established in February 2020 and holds prospecting licences covering 1,930.24 square kilometres, as well as mining licences covering 80 square kilometres.
The company currently has an installed processing capacity of 100 tonnes per hour and says its operations are contributing to job creation, the training of Angolan workers and efforts to reduce illegal mining.
The company’s expansion plans form part of Angola’s broader efforts to diversify its mining industry beyond diamonds and develop its gold resources as a contributor to economic growth.
MPOPO Gold’s push to reach up to 200 kilograms of annual production could therefore strengthen Angola’s position as an emerging gold producer while supporting the country’s ambitions to attract investment into its wider mineral resources sector.
