Shell Secures Majority Offtake from Morocco’s $239 Million LNG Import Terminal

Shell Locks in Up to 75% of Morocco’s Planned $239 Million LNG Terminal Capacity

Energy major Shell has secured rights to purchase up to 75% of the capacity from Morocco’s planned $239 million liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal, marking a significant step forward in the North African country’s efforts to strengthen energy security and diversify its power supply.

The agreement positions Shell as a key commercial partner in Morocco’s expanding natural gas infrastructure strategy, which aims to reduce dependence on imported fuels while ensuring reliable energy supplies to support industrial growth and electricity generation.

The planned LNG terminal is expected to play a central role in Morocco’s long-term energy transition by enabling the country to import natural gas from global markets.

The facility will provide critical infrastructure for receiving, storing and regasifying LNG before distribution to industrial users and power plants.

Morocco has increasingly turned to natural gas as part of a broader strategy to balance its rapidly growing renewable energy sector.

While the country continues to invest heavily in solar and wind power, gas is expected to serve as a transitional fuel that can provide flexible backup generation and improve grid stability.

Shell’s participation provides additional commercial certainty for the project, enhancing its attractiveness to investors and project developers.

By securing a substantial portion of the terminal’s future capacity, the company strengthens its presence in Morocco’s emerging gas market while supporting the development of new energy infrastructure in the region.

The project forms part of Morocco’s wider ambition to establish a modern gas-to-power value chain capable of supporting economic growth, industrial expansion and rising electricity demand.

Improved gas infrastructure is also expected to facilitate the integration of renewable energy by providing reliable dispatchable power when solar and wind output fluctuates.

As North Africa continues to attract energy investment, Morocco is positioning itself as a strategic regional energy hub, leveraging its geographic proximity to Europe, expanding infrastructure network and ambitious clean energy targets.

Shell’s latest commitment underscores growing international confidence in Morocco’s energy sector and highlights the increasing role of natural gas infrastructure in supporting the country’s economic and energy development objectives.
