Angola Strengthens Energy Partnership with China as Minister Pushes for Faster Project Delivery

Angola Seeks Deeper Energy Cooperation with China, Urges Acceleration of Strategic Power Projects

Angola is seeking to deepen its long-standing energy partnership with China, with Minister of Energy and Water João Baptista Borges using an official visit to Beijing to call for the accelerated implementation of key projects aimed at expanding the country’s electricity infrastructure and improving energy access.

During meetings with Chinese government officials, financial institutions and corporate leaders, Borges reaffirmed Angola’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector while emphasizing the need to fast-track projects that are critical to the country’s economic development.

The visit forms part of Angola’s broader strategy to attract investment, enhance electricity generation capacity and modernize transmission networks as demand for power continues to grow across the country.

Chinese companies have played a significant role in Angola’s energy infrastructure development over the past two decades, participating in the construction of power plants, transmission lines and water supply systems.

According to the minister, accelerating the execution of ongoing initiatives is essential to meeting Angola’s electrification targets and supporting industrial growth.

Discussions focused on improving project timelines, strengthening technical cooperation and mobilizing financing for priority energy and water infrastructure developments.

The engagements also highlighted opportunities for increased collaboration in renewable energy, grid expansion and rural electrification programmes, areas that are becoming increasingly important as Angola works to diversify its energy mix and improve reliability across the national power system.

China remains one of Angola’s most important strategic partners, with cooperation spanning infrastructure, energy, transport and financing.

The latest visit underscores Luanda’s efforts to leverage these partnerships to support economic transformation while ensuring that major development projects move from planning to implementation more quickly.

As Angola continues pursuing ambitious energy sector reforms and large-scale infrastructure investments, the government is placing growing emphasis on delivering projects on schedule to boost electricity access, strengthen industrial competitiveness and support long-term economic growth.
