Mozambique and South Africa Deepen Energy Cooperation, Set to Sign MoU Before December Summit
The Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy of Mozambique, Estêvão Pale, hosted the South African Minister of Electricity and Energy, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, in Maputo yesterday as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the energy sector and prepare for the upcoming binational meeting between the two Heads of State, scheduled for December in Mozambique.
Thursday’s meeting focused on consolidating political and technical dialogue between the two nations, with an emphasis on aligning strategies to develop key energy projects that will enhance security of supply in both countries. The talks come at a time when South Africa continues to face an energy deficit.
Among the priority areas of cooperation discussed were the expansion of energy production and transmission capacity, particularly through hydroelectric development, and joint initiatives in the Mpanda Nkuwa Hydropower and Rovuma Basin natural gas (LNG) projects.
The two ministers also reviewed opportunities for the construction, modernisation, and integration of energy infrastructure to ensure efficient transmission, grid stability, and greater interconnection between Mozambique, South Africa, and the wider Southern African region.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to signing, in the near future, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will outline the principles of technical cooperation, investment, and the implementation of joint energy initiatives.
Preparations for the December binational meeting were a central topic of discussion. The Mozambique–South Africa summit will be co-chaired by Presidents Daniel Chapo and Cyril Ramaphosa, who are expected to define strategic directions to further deepen collaboration in energy, economic development, and regional integration.
