Ghana Declares Commerciality of Eban-Akoma Oil and Gas Discoveries

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has officially declared the Eban-Akoma oil and gas discoveries in the Cape Three Points Block 4 (CTP-B4) as commercially viable, marking a major milestone in Ghana’s upstream petroleum sector.

The Declaration of Commerciality (DoC) was submitted by a joint venture comprising Eni Ghana Exploration & Production Ltd, Vitol Upstream Tano Ltd, Woodfields Upstream Ghana Ltd, and GNPC Exploration & Production Company Ltd (Explorco), in collaboration with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).

In an official statement, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, hailed the declaration as a “major boost to our oil and gas sector.”

He emphasized the strategic importance of the discovery in supporting Ghana’s broader economic and industrial transformation.

“The Declaration of Commerciality for the Eban-Akoma discoveries is a significant advancement.

It reflects the immense potential of Ghana’s offshore hydrocarbon resources to enhance energy security, drive industrialisation, and fuel economic growth.

We commend the JV partners and GNPC for their commitment to this strategic national asset,” the Minister stated.

With the declaration now in place, the joint venture partners are expected to develop and submit a comprehensive Plan of Development (PoD).

This plan will aim to maximize resource recovery while ensuring optimal value for Ghana, with a strong focus on local content participation in line with national energy policies.

The Ministry has assured that the Petroleum Commission and GNPC will provide regulatory oversight and strategic support throughout the development phase, ensuring alignment with the country’s economic and social priorities.

The Ministry further reiterated that this milestone highlights the government’s commitment to building a transparent, investor-friendly, and resilient energy sector.

Upcoming technical and commercial evaluations will play a crucial role in shaping a sustainable and inclusive development framework.
