Eni Starts Gas Production From Sabratha Compression Project to Boost Libya’s Offshore Output

Eni, in partnership with Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) through the Mellitah Oil & Gas joint venture, has commenced hydrocarbon production from the Sabratha Compression Project, a major offshore development designed to extend production from the Bahr Essalam gas field.

The project represents an important step in efforts to maximise recovery from the mature offshore field and maintain long-term gas production capacity for Libya’s domestic market and export network.

The Sabratha Compression Project involved the installation of a new 1,600-tonne compression module on the Sabratha platform.

The facility is equipped with new compression trains capable of handling a combined capacity of approximately 440 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMscfd).

The upgraded compression system allows the Bahr Essalam field to continue producing as reservoir pressure declines, improving recovery from existing wells and supporting the long-term sustainability of offshore gas production.

The project is expected to increase gas production by approximately 800 million cubic metres per year, together with associated condensate volumes.

The additional output will help supply Libya’s power generation sector, improve domestic energy security and support gas exports to Italy through the Greenstream pipeline.

Eni and NOC said the successful completion of the technically complex project demonstrates continued cooperation between Libya’s state energy company and its international partners in strengthening the country’s gas infrastructure.

The Sabratha Compression Project is part of a wider development programme being advanced by Mellitah Oil & Gas in Libya.

The partnership is also progressing work on the Bouri Gas Utilization Project, where tie-in and commissioning activities are underway following the installation of the Bouri Gas Recovery Module.

In addition, development activities are continuing on the Structures A&E project, which aims to bring two offshore gas fields into production and further strengthen Libya’s offshore gas supply.

Eni has operated in Libya since 1959 and remains one of the country’s leading international energy investors. T

he company continues to focus on maintaining production, developing new resources and supporting Libya’s energy sector through long-term investment programmes.

Eni has previously outlined plans to increase its activities in Libya, with several major projects under development and significant capital commitments aimed at expanding upstream production and improving energy infrastructure.

The start of production from the Sabratha Compression Project marks another milestone in Libya’s efforts to preserve offshore gas output and reinforce its role as a regional energy supplier.
