Angola Calls for Major Logistics Transformation to Strengthen Food Security

Angola Seeks Logistics Transformation to Improve Food Security and Agricultural Distribution

Angola’s Minister of Transport, Ricardo de Abreu, has called for a structural transformation of the country’s logistics system to strengthen food security and improve the distribution of agricultural products.

Speaking in Luanda, the minister said Angola needs a more integrated and efficient logistics network capable of connecting agricultural production areas with major consumption centres and markets.

He highlighted the importance of improving transport infrastructure and logistics services to reduce inefficiencies in the movement of agricultural goods.

A stronger connection between production, storage, transport and distribution would help reduce losses and improve the availability of food across the country.

The minister emphasised that logistics should be considered an essential component of Angola’s food-security strategy rather than simply a support service for the agricultural sector.

Improving the movement of goods will require greater coordination between different modes of transport, including road, rail and maritime networks.

Better integration could help reduce transportation costs, improve delivery times and increase access to markets for producers.

The development of efficient logistics infrastructure is particularly important as Angola seeks to expand domestic agricultural production and reduce its dependence on imported food.

Reliable transport links can also provide farmers and agro processors with better access to regional and international markets.

The government’s focus on logistics comes as investment in Angola’s transport infrastructure continues, including the development and rehabilitation of road and rail corridors that connect production zones with ports and commercial centres.

For the agricultural sector, improved logistics could support the development of more competitive supply chains, encourage private investment and create better conditions for moving locally produced food from farms to consumers.

The minister’s remarks underline the need for a coordinated approach in which agricultural development and transport planning advance together.

Strengthening logistics capacity could therefore play an important role in improving food distribution, reducing supply-chain losses and supporting Angola’s broader efforts to build a more resilient domestic food system.
