IEA Warns Strait of Hormuz Crisis Could Threaten Global Energy Security

Global Energy Security at Risk as IEA Warns Strait of Hormuz Disruption Could Last for Weeks

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has warned that global energy security could come under serious pressure if disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz are not resolved within weeks.

IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol said prolonged instability around the strategic waterway could have major consequences for global oil and gas markets, given the strait’s role as one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes.

The disruption has increased uncertainty in energy markets, raising concerns about possible supply shortages, higher fuel prices and broader economic impacts.

Countries that rely heavily on Middle Eastern energy exports could face the greatest risks if shipping restrictions continue.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global energy trade, with millions of barrels of oil and large volumes of liquefied natural gas passing through the route each day.

A prolonged closure or reduced flow could force governments and companies to seek alternative supplies, increase strategic reserves and accelerate energy diversification plans.

Birol said the situation highlights the vulnerability of global energy systems to geopolitical tensions and the need for stronger energy security measures.

A sustained disruption could add further pressure to economies already dealing with inflation concerns, while increasing the urgency for countries to strengthen supply chains and reduce dependence on concentrated energy sources.
