Renaissance Africa Energy Discovers Oil Offshore Nigeria, Boosting Indigenous Exploration Efforts
Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited has announced a significant oil discovery in Nigeria’s offshore Oil Mining Lease (OML) 74, marking a major milestone for the country’s indigenous energy sector.
The discovery was made through the successful drilling of the JK-004 exploration well, which encountered approximately 1,000 feet of hydrocarbon-bearing intervals across seven reservoirs.
Initial evaluations and fluid analysis confirmed the presence of high-quality reservoirs containing light crude oil.
Renaissance Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Tony Attah said the discovery highlights the company’s growing exploration capabilities and commitment to supporting Nigeria’s long-term oil production ambitions.
“The success of JK-004, just over one year after assuming operatorship of these assets, demonstrates the strength of our exploration strategy,” Attah said.
The company credited the achievement to collaboration among its employees, technical partners, contractors, regulators, and joint venture partners, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), TotalEnergies, and Agip Energy and Natural Resources.
Renaissance Vice-President of Exploration Johnbosco Uche said the discovery reflects the company’s technical expertise, detailed subsurface studies, and disciplined approach to reserve replacement.
He added that the well’s proximity to existing infrastructure could support faster development and commercial production.
Nigeria’s upstream regulator, the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), welcomed the discovery, saying it aligns with efforts to expand the country’s oil and gas reserves and strengthen energy security.
Renaissance Board Chairman Layi Fatona said the discovery demonstrates the continued potential of Nigeria’s hydrocarbon basins and the growing role of Nigerian companies in leading complex exploration projects.
The JK-004 discovery represents a boost for Nigeria’s oil sector as the country seeks to increase production, attract investment, and expand indigenous participation in upstream operations.
