Botswana Unearths 1,305-Carat Diamond in Another Historic Discovery at Karowe Mine
Botswana has uncovered a massive 1,305-carat diamond at the Karowe Diamond Mine, marking another major discovery for the country’s world-renowned diamond industry.
The exceptional gemstone was recovered by Lucara Diamond Corp, the operator of the Karowe mine in Botswana, using advanced X-ray transmission (XRT) technology designed to identify and recover large, high-value diamonds while reducing the risk of damage during processing.
The discovery adds to Karowe’s reputation as one of the world’s most significant sources of large diamonds.
The mine has previously produced several record-breaking gemstones, including the 1,758-carat Sewelô diamond and the 1,109-carat Lesedi La Rona diamond.
Botswana is Africa’s leading diamond producer by value, and the sector remains a critical contributor to the country’s economy, supporting government revenues, employment, and international trade.
The latest find highlights the continued geological potential of Botswana’s diamond resources and reinforces the importance of advanced mining technology in recovering rare and valuable stones.
The discovery comes as the global diamond industry adapts to changing market conditions, including shifting consumer demand and increased competition from lab-grown diamonds.
However, major discoveries such as this continue to demonstrate the enduring value of natural diamonds and Botswana’s position as a key player in the global diamond market.
