ADNOC Advances Bab Gas Cap Project in Major Step Toward Global Gas Expansion

ADNOC Advances Bab Gas Cap Project, Set to Become World’s Largest Gas Cap Development

The UAE is progressing with a key component of its long-term energy strategy as ADNOC moves ahead with the development of the Bab Gas Cap project, which could become the world’s largest gas cap development if fully realised.

An ADNOC-led concession has been selected to develop and operate the project, which is expected to produce around 1.5 billion standard cubic feet of natural gas per day at full capacity.

The ownership structure reflects the project’s strategic importance. ADNOC will hold a 60% stake, while the remaining share is distributed among major international partners, including TotalEnergies, BP, CNPC, and other companies from Japan, China and South Korea.

The project focuses on a gas cap reservoir, a geological formation where natural gas accumulates above an oil column.

In conventional oil production, this gas helps maintain reservoir pressure and supports crude extraction.

Developing the gas cap allows operators to recover additional gas resources that would otherwise remain underutilised.

The Bab Gas Cap project is designed to serve a dual purpose: increasing domestic gas supply while maximising recovery from an existing oil field, improving overall resource efficiency.

A final investment decision is still pending. However, if approved, the project would mark a significant milestone in the UAE’s strategy to strengthen gas self-sufficiency, support growing industrial demand, and enhance long-term export flexibility.

Beyond production gains, the project highlights a broader shift in energy strategy focused on extracting greater value from mature reservoirs that have been in operation for decades.
