Luanda Refinery cuts greenhouse gas emissions in production

The Luanda Refinery carried out a successful test of the use of hydrogen (a fuel that does not generate greenhouse gases) in the production of energy for production, in what Sonangol, which controls the petrochemical unit, considers to be the scope a milestone in the decarbonization process.

Luanda refinery uses hydrogen energy in production this is defined as a process of reducing carbon emissions into the atmosphere, especially carbon dioxide, decarbonization is adopted to achieve a global economy with lower emissions and climate neutrality through energy transition, in options adopted by the state oil company for the alignment with the trend of the world hydrocarbon industry.

A source from Sonangol declared that, with a first production obtained based on this environmentally friendly process, still on 8 June, the relevance of the test lies in the fact that the operation of generating electricity with hydrogen took place on a turbine, the first being worldwide on equipment of the tested model.

The turbine running on hydrogen as fuel has a capacity to generate 10 megawatts (MW), with energy production taking place according to electricity consumption needs. at the Luanda Refinery, said the chairman of the Executive Committee of the Refining and Petrochemicals Business Unit.

Joaquim Kiteculo, quoted in the June edition of Sonangol’s newsletter, published Thursday, said that the test is of transcendental importance as it constitutes “another step in the efforts of the national company in favor of the environment”.

The advantages, he continued, lie in the substantial reduction in the burning of gases and the generation of greenhouse gases, as well as in the consumption of naphtha (a highly flammable fuel) in energy production.

In addition, the recovery of a turbine that had been out of service since 2017 is reported and the achievement of the major objective of taking advantage of the excess gas rich in hydrogen produced by the new gasoline production complex at the Luanda Refinery, inaugurated a year ago , on July 7, 2022, increasing production from 395 thousand to 1.58 million liters per day.
