Tanzania and Angola Advance Rail Partnership to Connect East and West African Trade and Mining Corridors
Tanzania and Angola have agreed to strengthen cooperation on a landmark rail connectivity initiative that aims to link the Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean coasts, creating a strategic transport corridor for trade, mining exports and regional economic integration.
The agreement focuses on connecting Tanzania’s Central Corridor and the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) network with Angola’s Lobito Corridor, establishing a continuous rail route across Southern and Central Africa.
The initiative is expected to improve access to international markets for landlocked countries while reducing transport costs and transit times for key exports.
The proposed connection has significant implications for the mining sector, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia, two of the world’s most important producers of copper and cobalt.
By providing access to both the Port of Dar es Salaam on the Indian Ocean and the Port of Lobito on the Atlantic Ocean, the rail network could offer mining companies greater export flexibility and improved logistics efficiency.
Officials from both countries view the project as a catalyst for regional trade and industrial development.
Enhanced rail connectivity is expected to facilitate the movement of minerals, agricultural products and manufactured goods across multiple African markets while supporting the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The Lobito Corridor has emerged as one of Africa’s most strategically important transport projects, attracting international investment as demand grows for critical minerals used in electric vehicles, renewable energy systems and battery manufacturing.
Linking the corridor to East Africa would further strengthen its role as a key route for mineral exports from the Copperbelt region.
For Angola, the initiative supports efforts to position the Lobito Corridor as a major logistics gateway to global markets.
For Tanzania, the partnership enhances the value of its rail and port infrastructure by expanding connections to mineral-rich regions in Central and Southern Africa.
Industry analysts believe the development could reshape regional supply chains by creating alternative export routes for mining companies and reducing dependence on traditional transport corridors. The project also has the potential to stimulate investment in rail infrastructure, logistics services and industrial development along the route.
As Africa continues to invest in cross-border infrastructure, the planned Angola-Tanzania rail link is being viewed as a major step toward creating an integrated continental transport network capable of supporting long-term trade growth and mineral development.
