QatarEnergy Announces Promising Merlin-1X Oil Discovery Offshore Namibia in Orange Basin Exploration Program
QatarEnergy has announced a new oil discovery with encouraging results from the Merlin-1X exploration well, drilled in Petroleum Exploration License 39 (PEL 0039) offshore Namibia.
Merlin-1X is the tenth well drilled within the license area and has delivered the most promising subsurface results to date.
The well encountered high-quality reservoir formations containing light oil, along with limited associated natural gas.
His Excellency Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, commented on the discovery, noting that it follows three earlier finds in Namibia.
He stated that the results further reinforce confidence in the Orange Basin as an emerging world-class hydrocarbon province and support QatarEnergy’s strategy of expanding its international upstream exploration portfolio through high-impact projects.
He also expressed appreciation to the Government of the Republic of Namibia for its continued support of exploration activities, and congratulated partners Shell and the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia on the achievement.
QatarEnergy currently holds interests in four offshore exploration licenses in Namibia PEL 0039 (45%), PEL 0056 (35.25%), PEL 0091 (33.03%), and PEL 0090 (27.5%) together covering approximately 34,000 square kilometers in the Orange Basin.
