Angola Launches Luena–Saurimo Railway Branch to Strengthen Eastern Connectivity

Angola Begins Construction of Luena–Saurimo Railway Linking Moxico and Lunda-Sul

Angola’s Ministry of Transport has officially launched construction of the Luena–Saurimo Railway Branch, marking a major milestone in the expansion and modernisation of the country’s national rail network.

The ceremony included the laying of the first stone and the signing of the consignment notice for the project, which will directly connect the provinces of Moxico and Lunda-Sul.

The project has been awarded to a consortium led by Odebrecht Engineering and Construction and Bento Pedroso Constructions.

It comprises the development of a 260-kilometre railway line, the construction of 11 bridges, eight railway stations, and two strategic crossings.

The works are scheduled for completion within 60 months and are expected to generate approximately 2,000 direct jobs, delivering a significant boost to local economies along the corridor.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Minister of Transport Ricardo Viegas D’Abreu described the Luena–Saurimo Railway Branch as a cornerstone of Angola’s transport strategy.

He emphasised that the project represents a decisive step toward territorial integration, sustainable economic growth, and strengthened national and regional logistics connectivity.

According to the minister, the railway will play a critical role in improving the movement of people and goods while accelerating economic development in Moxico and Lunda-Sul.

Also in attendance, Moxico Governor Ernesto Mungala highlighted the transformative impact the project will have on the eastern region of the country.

He noted that the new railway line will significantly enhance mobility, freight transport capacity, and overall economic dynamism.

The Luena–Saurimo Railway Branch forms part of Angola’s National Development Plan and the Transport Sector Master Plan.

The project is designed to enable future rail connections to Malange, Kuito, and Menongue, as well as neighbouring countries, reinforcing Angola’s ambition to position itself as a strategic logistics hub in Southern Africa.
