Mozambique Greenlights $7.2 Billion Coral Norte LNG Project, Backed by Eni, to Boost Gas Exports
Mozambique will officially launch the $7.2 billion Coral Norte natural gas project next month in the Rovuma Basin’s Area 4, President Daniel Chapo announced on Monday during the Global Energy Alliance meeting in New York, held alongside the 80th United Nations General Assembly.
Construction of Coral Norte is set to begin in October 2025, led by Italian energy major Eni. The project will be Mozambique’s second floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility, with a planned annual output of 3.55 million metric tonnes of LNG over the next 30 years.
The development follows government approval of Eni’s plan earlier this year and builds on the success of Coral Sul, Mozambique’s first FLNG platform, which began exports in 2022.
Like Coral Sul, Coral Norte will extract gas from the same reservoir, estimated to hold 450–500 billion cubic metres.
The facility will be supplied by six subsea wells and is scheduled to start production in the second quarter of 2028.
While Mozambique’s offshore LNG projects are progressing, its onshore ambitions continue to face challenges.
