TotalEnergies Increases Angola’s Oil Production with Begonia and CLOV Phase III Projects

TotalEnergies Adds 60,000 Barrels Per Day to Angola’s Oil Production with New Offshore Projects

TotalEnergies SE has expanded its oil production capacity in Angola by 60,000 barrels per day (bpd) with the launch of the Begonia and CLOV Phase III offshore projects.

The Begonia project, located 150 kilometers off the Angolan coast, contributes 30,000 bpd from five subsea wells connected to the Pazflor FPSO (Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading) vessel.

Notably, Begonia marks Angola’s first inter-block development, spanning Blocks 17 and 17/06, both operated by TotalEnergies. The company holds a 38% stake in Block 17 and 30% in Block 17/06.

The CLOV Phase III project, situated 140 kilometers offshore in Block 17, also adds 30,000 bpd from four wells tied back to the CLOV FPSO.

In Block 17, TotalEnergies partners with:

Equinor – 22.16%

ExxonMobil – 19%

Azule Energy – 15.84%

Sonangol (state-owned) – 5%

In Block 17/06, the partners include:

Sonangol – 30%

SSI – 27.5%

ETU Energias – 7.5%

Falcon Oil – 5%

According to Paulino Jeronimo, Chairman of Angola’s National Petroleum, Gas, and Biofuels Agency, these new developments are critical to maintaining national oil production above one million bpd.

Nicolas Terraz, TotalEnergies’ President of Exploration & Production, highlighted the company’s strategy to optimize existing FPSO capacity in Block 17—specifically Pazflor and CLOV—to reduce operational costs and carbon emissions.

In addition to Pazflor and CLOV, TotalEnergies also operates the Dalia and Girassol FPSOs in Block 17. The company continues to pursue infill drilling and recently completed the Dalia-6 exploration well in 2024.

Beyond Block 17, TotalEnergies is advancing other key projects:

In Block 20/11, the Kaminho project—Angola’s first major deepwater development in the Kwanza Basin—was approved in 2024.

Set to produce 70,000 bpd from the Cameia and Golfinho fields, production is expected to begin in 2028. TotalEnergies operates Kaminho with a 40% interest.

In Block 32, where the company holds a 30% stake, development drilling is ongoing through Q3 2025. This includes three infill wells under Kari Phase 1.

The block is already producing via the Kaombo Norte and Kaombo Sul FPSOs, with additional developments under review for the central and northern discoveries.

Additionally, Block 0, where TotalEnergies holds a 10% stake, received a license extension through 2045.

Overall, TotalEnergies plays a pivotal role in Angola’s energy landscape, contributing over 45% of the country’s oil production through its extensive deepwater operations.
