Angola and Algeria Strengthen Energy and Mining Cooperation Following João Lourenço’s State Visit
Angola and Algeria are advancing bilateral cooperation in the oil, gas and mineral resources sectors following high-level discussions between Angola’s Minister of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo, and Algerian Ambassador to Angola, Mounir Bourouba.
The meeting, held on Monday at Angola’s Ministry of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas (MIREMPET), focused on the implementation of agreements signed during President João Lourenço’s recent state visit to Algeria earlier this month.
According to a statement issued by MIREMPET, the discussions centred on mechanisms for executing bilateral agreements aimed at strengthening strategic cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the energy and mining sectors.
Follow-Up to João Lourenço’s State Visit
Ambassador Mounir Bourouba described the meeting as a continuation of the historic state visit undertaken by President João Lourenço to Algeria in May 2026.
During that visit, Angola and Algeria signed 12 bilateral cooperation agreements covering several sectors of mutual interest. Among them were two strategic agreements specifically linked to oil, gas and mineral resources development.
The ambassador said the latest discussions were intended to ensure effective implementation of those agreements and to deepen institutional and technical collaboration between the two countries.
“The main objective was to analyse the mechanisms for implementing these bilateral agreements, with the aim of strengthening cooperation between Angola and Algeria in strategic sectors,” the statement noted.
Expanding Collaboration Between Sonangol and Sonatrach
As part of the growing partnership, the Algerian diplomat also announced plans for additional joint initiatives involving Angola’s national oil company, Sonangol, and Algeria’s state-owned energy company, Sonatrach.
The upcoming activities are expected to include cooperation between training institutions and universities linked to the oil and gas industry, with a focus on skills development and technical capacity building.
According to the ambassador, these initiatives are intended to benefit students and professionals in the sector while promoting knowledge exchange between the two countries.
The collaboration reflects a broader effort by both Angola and Algeria to strengthen human capital development within their energy industries and support long-term sector growth.
Strengthening Strategic Bilateral Relations
The meeting between Diamantino Azevedo and Ambassador Bourouba underscores the growing importance of Angola-Algeria relations, particularly in strategic sectors such as hydrocarbons, mining and energy development.
Both countries are among Africa’s major oil producers and have increasingly sought to expand regional cooperation through investment partnerships, technical collaboration and institutional engagement.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Ambassador Bourouba thanked Minister Diamantino Azevedo for his openness and commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation between Angola and Algeria.
The discussions signal continued momentum in relations between the two countries as they seek to translate recent diplomatic engagements into concrete economic and industrial partnerships.
