Angola Accelerates Renewable Energy Transition with Luau Solar Park

Angola Expands Clean Energy Mix with Luau Solar Park, Powering 20,000+ Homes

The MCA Group has praised the Angolan government’s strategy of investing in renewable and environmentally friendly energy, highlighting that ongoing and completed projects demonstrate a clear commitment to a sustainable energy transition.

Elisabete Alves, Chair of MCA Angola, described the approach as forward-looking and effective, noting that the government is developing a balanced energy mix by maximizing the country’s hydroelectric and solar potential.

She made these remarks during the inauguration of the Luau Photovoltaic Solar Park, an event presided over by President João Lourenço.

According to Alves, Angola is progressing steadily toward a sustainable energy future. She emphasized that combining hydroelectric and solar power strengthens the resilience and technical stability of the national grid while supporting long-term environmental goals.

“The authorities are clearly implementing a sustainable transition, focused on future generations and ensuring system reliability through a diversified energy mix,” she said.

The newly inaugurated solar park features 54,912 panels and is expected to supply electricity to 20,573 homes, benefiting approximately 94,000 people in Moxico Leste province.

Alves also highlighted the logistical challenges encountered during construction, which began in June 2024 and concluded in May 2026.

The project site’s remote location over 1,300 kilometers from Luanda and near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo made transportation of materials particularly demanding.

“The biggest challenge was logistics,” she explained. “Transporting equipment from abroad and from Luanda to such a remote area required significant coordination.”

Active in Angola’s energy sector since 2017, MCA has been developing photovoltaic projects in the country since 2020 and now has a portfolio of seven solar parks.

The company is also contributing to workforce development by training young Angolan engineers in renewable energy technologies.

Alves noted that future projects will incorporate advanced energy storage systems using lithium batteries, enhancing efficiency and reliability across installations.

The Luau Solar Park spans 60 hectares, with an installed capacity of 31.85 megawatts and energy storage capacity of 79 megawatts.

It forms part of the “Angola Energia 2025” initiative, which aims to electrify 60 rural communities across the provinces of Bié, Malanje, Lunda Norte, Lunda Sul, Moxico, and Moxico Leste by 2027.
