Angola plans to produce its first non-associated gas by 2025, announced Diamantino Azevedo, Minister of Mineral Resources, Petroleum, and Gas, during a ceremony in Luanda on November 23, 2024.
The event marked the signing of a Risk Service Agreement between the National Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANPG) and the New Gas Consortium (NCG).
Minister Azevedo explained that large-scale projects like this require clear objectives and goals. He expressed gratitude to the gas consortium and the oil agency for meeting the government’s challenge to shorten the project timeline, enabling the production of non-associated gas earlier than initially anticipated.
“This challenge was set some time ago, and the operator responded by reducing the production start date by about six months.
We are pleased because we could have the first gas by the end of next year, which is positive for our economy and the sector,” he said.
The first phase of the project will increase gas supply to Angola LNG and support the construction of an ammonia and urea plant in Soyo.
“This is an important milestone, with the signing of the factory construction contract and the availability of gas for domestic use, energy production, and other projects related to petrochemicals and steel manufacturing,” the minister added.
The operational focus of the new Gas Consortium, through gas concession contracts and the development of the Quiluma and Maboqueiro projects, aims to mitigate risks to the ALNG plant and ensure a steady supply of gas for domestic consumption, including cooking gas and energy production at the Soyo Combined Cycle Power Plant.
The investors of NCG expect to invest around USD 4 billion over the life cycle of the first project, which will contribute to Angola’s GDP growth.
An estimated 400 new jobs will be created during the construction phase of the platforms, operated by the New Gas Consortium.
Additionally, 300 more jobs will be created during the construction of the gas treatment plant in Soyo.
