Namibe Province Aims to Enhance Energy Sustainability and Competitiveness

Namibe province plans to invest in diverse energy sources to ensure greater sustainability in production and compete with imported goods, announced Abel Capitango, the vice-governor for the Political, Social, and Economic sector, on Friday in Luanda.

Speaking to Jornal de Angola at the Luanda International Fair, Capitango acknowledged the challenges faced despite the presence of the Caraculo Solar Photovoltaic Plant, which has a capacity of nearly 25 megawatts.

The primary challenge is to install an energy system that covers the main agricultural fields and factories.

“For instance, irrigation for vegetable production currently relies on boreholes powered by diesel and gasoline pumps, making production costly.

If we can implement alternative energy sources, we can significantly reduce production costs,” he stated.

The construction of the Baines Dam in the municipality of Tômbwa, with a capacity to produce 600 megawatts of energy, is expected to transform the desert into one of the province’s main production areas.

At this edition of the fair, Namibe showcased its local resources, including mining, fishing, livestock, agricultural products, tourism, and industrial goods.

According to Capitango, a key objective of participating in the business exchange was to attract investors to sectors that the province aims to develop.

“By participating in the fair, we hope to attract national and foreign business people to view the province as a significant investment opportunity,” he appealed.
