Angola Expands Solar Power Programme, Cuts Fuel Costs and Boosts Energy Access

Angola Saves 200 Billion Kwanzas Annually as Solar Projects Replace Diesel Power Plants

Angola is significantly reducing energy costs and fuel consumption through the expansion of solar power projects, with annual savings estimated at around 200 billion kwanzas, according to PRODEL.

José Salles, Director of Projects at PRODEL, said the transition from diesel-fired thermal plants to photovoltaic (solar) facilities is delivering substantial economic and environmental benefits.

He noted that the shift is cutting fuel consumption by more than 500 million litres per year.

According to a government statement, the largest savings are being generated by the Biópio and Baía Farta solar parks, both inaugurated in July 2022. Each facility saves approximately 215 million litres of fuel annually.

Other contributing projects include the Luena plant (19.5 million litres), Saurimo (19 million), Luau (17.9 million), Cazombo (9.7 million), and Lucapa (nearly five million litres per year).

Transition from Diesel to Solar Energy

Speaking during the inauguration of the Luau Photovoltaic Park, Salles explained that the programme aims to phase out diesel-based thermal power generation as solar plants become operational.

He said solar facilities eliminate the high costs associated with fuel procurement, reduce operational complexity, and significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions linked to diesel combustion.

Expanding Access to Electricity

Beyond cost savings, the solar projects are also improving electricity access in underserved communities. Each installation includes the extension of distribution networks, enabling more households to connect to the grid.

Salles highlighted the social benefits of increased electrification, including improved food preservation, enhanced access to education through lighting for evening study, and better functioning of public services and local businesses.

The national programme, coordinated by PRODEL, предусматривает the development of solar power plants across 60 locations in multiple provinces, including Lunda Norte, Lunda Sul, Moxico, Malanje, and Bié.

The initiative will deliver a combined capacity of 250 megawatts of solar generation, supported by a 590 megawatt-hour battery storage system to ensure reliable electricity supply during nighttime hours.

Overall, Angola’s solar expansion marks a key step toward reducing dependence on fossil fuels, lowering energy costs, and strengthening national energy security while advancing sustainable development goals.
