Nigeria Signs Agreement with LONGi to Establish 1 GW Solar Manufacturing Facility and Boost Local Renewable Energy Production
Nigeria has signed a strategic agreement with LONGi Green Energy Technology Co. Ltd., China’s leading solar panel manufacturer, to establish a 1,000-megawatt (1 GW) solar equipment manufacturing plant in the country.
The initiative aims to strengthen local production capacity and accelerate Nigeria’s transition toward renewable energy.
According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) played a pivotal role in facilitating this landmark partnership between the Nigerian government and LONGi.
The agreement was finalized during a follow-up visit by a Nigerian delegation to China, building on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed earlier in the year.
The new arrangement cements LONGi’s commitment to investing in Nigeria’s renewable energy infrastructure and supporting domestic manufacturing.
Under the deal, LONGi will establish a solar panel production facility capable of manufacturing up to 1,000 MW of solar modules annually, positioning Nigeria as a regional hub for clean energy technology.
Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, described the collaboration as a major milestone for Nigeria’s renewable energy sector.
He emphasized that the partnership aligns with the federal government’s goal of expanding solar generation capacity and reducing reliance on imported solar equipment.
The ECN is currently implementing the Renewed Hope Solarisation Programme, which aims to deploy solar mini-grids and renewable systems across public institutions nationwide as part of the current administration’s broader energy transition agenda.
This partnership with LONGi is expected to create jobs, transfer technical expertise, and enhance Nigeria’s energy security, paving the way for sustainable economic growth and increased access to affordable clean power.
