Angola Faces Oil Shortfall in May as LNG Exports Exceed Expectations

Angola’s oil production in May fell short of expectations once again, averaging approximately 1.01 million barrels per day, which is around 150,000 barrels below the country’s official target, according to the National Agency for Oil, Gas and Biofuels.

In total, Angola produced 31.48 million barrels of crude oil during the month. The production of associated natural gas reached 81 billion cubic feet, most of which was reinjected into oil reservoirs to maintain pressure and optimize extraction.

Portions of the gas were also sent to the Angola LNG (ALNG) facility in Soyo or used to power offshore platforms.

Despite the decline in crude output, ALNG performed slightly above expectations, producing 4.48 million barrels of oil equivalent in May—0.16% more than projected.

This includes liquefied natural gas (LNG), propane, butane, and condensates, with an average daily output of around 145,000 barrels of oil equivalent.

Of the total oil produced, nearly 29 million barrels were exported, while approximately 1.79 million barrels were sent to the Luanda Refinery to help meet domestic energy needs.

Angola remains one of Africa’s top oil producers, alongside Nigeria, and continues to rely heavily on oil exports as a key source of tax revenue and foreign exchange.
