Central African Republic Inaugurates 50 MW Solar Plant with Battery Storage to Boost Electricity Supply
The Central African Republic (CAR) has inaugurated a 50 MW solar photovoltaic plant with 15 MWh of battery storage at Sakaï, southwest of the capital Bangui, marking a major step in the country’s efforts to expand electricity generation and improve grid reliability.
Developed by UAE-based Global South Utilities (GSU), the facility features more than 80,000 solar panels and 156 inverters.
It is expected to increase the country’s national electricity generation capacity by more than 60% and provide power to more than 300,000 households through the national grid.
The integrated battery system will help stabilise the grid and manage fluctuations in solar generation, allowing electricity supply to continue more reliably beyond periods of sunlight.
Power from the completed facility will be introduced in phases, initially supplying 15 MW to Bangui’s third and ninth districts before expanding to other areas.
The project was completed approximately 10 months after construction began in August 2025, highlighting the pace at which new renewable energy capacity can be deployed to address CAR’s electricity needs.
For CAR, the Sakaï project represents an important investment in renewable energy infrastructure and could help improve electricity access while reducing pressure on existing generation capacity.
The development also strengthens GSU’s growing renewable energy portfolio across Africa and demonstrates the increasing role of solar-plus-storage projects in improving energy security across the continent.
