Egypt Approves New Oil and Gas Free Zone in New Alamein to Boost Petroleum Trading
Egypt has approved the establishment of a new special free zone in New Alamein City dedicated to the storage and trading of crude oil and petroleum products.
The zone will be operated by Fujairah Alamein Oil and Gas Company, an Egyptian Emirati joint-stock company, under Cabinet Resolution No. 65 of 2026.
The facility will cover approximately 738,000 square metres in Matrouh Governorate, near the expansion area of El Hamra Port.
Under the terms of the approval, the company will be required to export 100% of its annual production to international markets, while at least 50% of the inputs used in its manufactured products must be sourced locally.
The zone will operate under the supervision of Egypt’s General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI), which will monitor the project’s operations and compliance with regulatory requirements.
The company must also secure the site, obtain environmental approval and comply with Egypt’s industrial safety, civil defence and fire protection regulations.
The development comes as Egypt seeks to strengthen its position as a regional energy and trading hub while attracting investment into its petroleum infrastructure.
It also complements broader efforts to expand oil and gas exploration, production and investment in the country.
The new free zone is expected to support petroleum trading and storage activities while strengthening the strategic role of New Alamein and the wider Matrouh region in Egypt’s energy infrastructure.
