Egypt Targets 1GW of Industrial Solar Capacity Through New National Initiative

Egypt Launches Industry Solar Initiative to Install 1GW of Rooftop Solar Across Factories by 2028

Egypt is planning to install 1 gigawatt (GW) of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity across its industrial sector over the next two years under a newly launched programme known as the Industry Solar Initiative.

The initiative will support the deployment of rooftop solar systems on factories and industrial facilities nationwide.

The programme is part of Egypt’s broader strategy to expand renewable energy use, reduce carbon emissions, and strengthen energy security for industry.

By increasing the use of clean energy in manufacturing, the government aims to lower dependence on conventional power sources while promoting sustainable industrial growth.

Egypt’s Minister of Industry, Khaled Hashem, recently held discussions with Chitose Noguchi, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), to review the implementation plans.

The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between the Egyptian government and international development partners to accelerate renewable energy adoption and advance the country’s sustainability goals.

The Industry Solar Initiative is being implemented with support from the UNDP and Egypt’s Industrial Modernization Center.

Financial backing for the programme is being provided by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) as part of its wider commitment to renewable energy development in Egypt.

The initiative also builds on earlier progress in distributed solar energy deployment across the country.

Previous projects carried out through the same partnership resulted in the installation of grid-connected solar systems on commercial, residential, public, and tourism-related buildings.

These efforts helped expand solar adoption across multiple sectors and created a foundation for further growth in Egypt’s renewable energy market.

With the new initiative, Egypt aims to accelerate the transition toward cleaner industrial energy systems while enhancing the competitiveness and sustainability of its manufacturing sector.
