Aliko Dangote Plans to Reduce Cooking Gas Prices in Nigeria by Bypassing Distributors

Aliko Dangote Vows to Cut Cooking Gas Prices, May Sell LPG Directly to Nigerians

Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, has unveiled plans to reduce the cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, across Nigeria.

He warned that if distributors continue to inflate prices, his company will begin selling directly to consumers.

Dangote made this announcement during a recent tour of the Dangote Refinery in Lekki, Lagos, attended by both Nigerian stakeholders and international visitors.

He emphasized that the current high cost of LPG is unaffordable for many Nigerians—particularly those who still rely on firewood and kerosene for household cooking.

“We produce about 22,000 tonnes of LPG daily, and we want Nigerians to feel the benefit of this supply,” he said while addressing members of the Lagos Business School’s CGEO Africa delegation.

Dangote stressed that the use of LPG is steadily growing across the country, and his goal is to make it accessible and affordable for all.

If middlemen and distributors resist lowering their prices, he said, the company will bypass them entirely and sell LPG directly to end users.

This direct-to-consumer strategy aims to lower costs, promote cleaner energy alternatives, and accelerate the transition away from traditional fuels like firewood and kerosene.

Currently, the price of cooking gas in Nigeria ranges from ₦1,000 to ₦1,300 per kilogram—prices that many households find difficult to afford.

By increasing accessibility and affordability, Dangote hopes to support broader energy reforms and environmental sustainability while easing the economic burden on Nigerian families.
