Morocco Launches LNG Terminal Project to Support Energy Transition and Regional Connectivity

Morocco’s Ministry of Energy has issued an expression of interest for the development of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at the Port of Nador, marking the first phase of a tender process aimed at strengthening the country’s energy infrastructure.

The proposed terminal will include a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) and will be connected to a planned pipeline stretching south to Dakhla, eventually linking to the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline, which will span 13 West African countries.

Though natural gas currently plays a limited role in Morocco’s electricity mix, the government is positioning it as a transitional energy source with lower carbon emissions, aligning with its broader climate goals.

The terminal is expected to support electricity production and supply industrial zones in Mohammedia and Kenitra, enhancing energy security and industrial growth.
