De Beers Transfers Initial P1 Billion to Botswana’s Diamonds for Development Fund

Botswana’s Economic Diversification Drive Gains Momentum with P1 Billion De Beers Contribution to Development Fund

Botswana’s efforts to diversify its economy beyond diamonds have received a boost following the transfer of an initial P1 billion contribution from De Beers Group to the Diamonds for Development Fund.

The funding provides the foundation for investments aimed at creating jobs, developing new industries and translating the country’s diamond wealth into broader and more sustainable economic opportunities.

The Fund was established through the longstanding partnership between the Government of Botswana and De Beers to support economic diversification, industrialisation and long-term national development.

The initial disbursement followed the establishment of the Fund’s governance structures, including the appointment of development economist and former African Development Bank President Dr Akinwumi Adesina as chairperson, alongside a 10-member independent board.

Catalysing Investment Beyond Diamonds

The Fund is designed to act as a catalytic investment platform, mobilising additional domestic and international capital to support enterprise development, industrialisation, export competitiveness and employment creation.

Botswana’s Minister of Minerals and Energy, Bogolo Kenewendo, described the initiative as a strategic instrument for economic transformation, emphasising the importance of converting the value of the country’s diamond resources into lasting prosperity for its citizens.

De Beers Group Chief Executive Officer Al Cook reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Botswana’s diamond industry and the government’s economic diversification ambitions.

He said the Fund would provide a mechanism for generating sustainable economic opportunities beyond the diamond sector.

The initiative comes as Botswana seeks to broaden its economic base and reduce its reliance on diamonds by supporting new industries and strengthening the private sector.

Fund Moves Towards Implementation

Following initial stakeholder engagements and board meetings in Gaborone in September, the Fund is working towards finalising its strategy, business plan and implementation programmes.

Adesina said the initial contribution marked an important step towards implementation, with the Fund expected to focus on strategic investments that accelerate economic diversification, industrial development, export growth and job creation.

The P1 billion contribution establishes the Fund’s initial financial base as it seeks to attract significantly more investment to support Botswana’s transition towards a more diversified, productive and competitive economy.

The Fund’s long-term impact will depend on how effectively it mobilises additional capital and directs investments towards initiatives capable of generating sustainable jobs and expanding economic activity beyond diamonds.
