US Engineering Firm KBR Expands Libya Operations Across Oil, Gas and Renewable Energy
US engineering company KBR is expanding its presence in Libya, exploring opportunities in renewable energy while continuing to pursue oil, gas and refining projects in the North African country.
The company has held discussions with Libya’s Renewable Energy Authority on potential clean energy contracts as the country seeks to modernise its energy infrastructure and develop renewable power projects.
The talks form part of KBR’s broader effort to establish a stronger operational presence in Libya.
KBR has opened a local office and is strengthening its engagement with Libyan authorities and state-owned energy companies. Its activities span engineering, project management and technical support across the oil, gas and refining sectors.
KBR Advances Oil and Gas Projects
Alongside its renewable energy ambitions, KBR continues to pursue opportunities in Libya’s conventional energy sector.
In March 2026, the company secured a contract to provide project management and technical support for the South Refinery Project in Ubari on behalf of Zallaf Oil and Gas Company.
KBR is also reassessing the front-end engineering design for the development of the J6 crude oil field, operated by Waha Oil Company north of Jalu. The review is intended to advance the field’s development planning.
The combination of conventional energy projects and potential renewable energy contracts could broaden KBR’s role in Libya’s energy industry, where authorities are seeking to strengthen infrastructure and expand power generation capacity.
Libya’s Energy Potential Attracts Investment
Libya holds Africa’s largest proven crude oil reserves, making it a strategically important market for international energy companies.
The country is seeking to increase production, improve infrastructure and strengthen its position in global oil markets.
In August 2026, Libya’s crude oil production reportedly exceeded 43 million barrels for the month, while energy revenues surpassed US$2 billion.
Production had also reached approximately 1.49 million barrels per day in June, its highest level in 12 years.
For KBR, expanding its Libyan operations offers opportunities across established oil and gas activities as well as emerging renewable energy projects.
The company’s ability to secure further contracts will depend on project approvals, investment decisions and the implementation of Libya’s energy development plans.
The expansion reflects a broader effort to position KBR as a technical and engineering partner in Libya’s energy sector, supporting both conventional hydrocarbon development and the country’s emerging clean energy ambitions.
