Sintana Energy’s Namibia Oil Discovery Strengthens Orange Basin Potential
Sintana Energy is advancing its position in Namibia’s rapidly emerging offshore oil province following major resource growth at the Mopane discovery in the Orange Basin.
The company holds an indirect interest in Petroleum Exploration Licence 83 (PEL 83), where the Mopane discoveries were made in 2023 and 2024. The project is operated by Galp Energia.
In March 2026, Galp upgraded Mopane’s gross 3C contingent resources by 57% to 1.38 billion barrels of oil equivalent, up from 875 million barrels previously estimated. The increase followed the success of exploration drilling at the discovery.
The resource upgrade reinforces the potential of Namibia’s Orange Basin, which has attracted significant international attention following a series of major oil and gas discoveries.
Sintana has exposure to several prospective licences in Namibia, including PEL 83, PEL 79, PEL 87 and PEL 90 in the Orange Basin, as well as PEL 82 in the Walvis Basin.
The company’s growing portfolio comes as Namibia seeks to transform its emerging petroleum industry into a new source of investment, government revenue and economic growth.
For Sintana, the expanding resource base at Mopane provides significant exposure to one of Africa’s most closely watched offshore exploration regions.
Further appraisal and development work will be critical to determining the commercial potential of the discovery and its pathway towards future production.
The progress at Mopane strengthens Namibia’s position as an emerging global oil and gas frontier and could accelerate efforts to move the country from major discoveries towards commercial oil production.
