De Beers launches SynthDetect 2 diamond screening technology with under-five-minute tray scans
De Beers Group’s Science & Technology division has introduced SynthDetect 2, a new desktop diamond screening instrument designed to improve the speed, efficiency and automation of diamond verification.
The next-generation technology was developed in collaboration with participants across the diamond trade to better integrate screening into the operations of manufacturers, laboratories and retailers.
SynthDetect 2 can complete a full tray scan in under five minutes, compared with about 30 minutes for previous versions, significantly increasing screening throughput and productivity.
The instrument can also screen a wider range of diamonds and jewellery formats than earlier versions.
Increased automation reduces the need for operator intervention, while automatically generated reports and software updates are designed to further streamline the screening process.
Building on existing technology
SynthDetect 2 builds on De Beers’ previous SynthDetect instruments, with the original launched in 2017 and SynthDetect XL following in 2018.
The earlier systems were developed to enable multiple diamonds, including stones set in jewellery, to be screened simultaneously without requiring a probe.
According to De Beers, the latest version was developed through closer engagement with industry participants to ensure the technology addresses both technical screening requirements and day-to-day operational needs.
De Beers Group Science & Technology Senior Vice-President Sarandos Gouvelis said the collaborative development process had helped produce a system that combines increased screening speed with greater operational efficiency.
SynthDetect 2 was being demonstrated at the Hong Kong Gem & Jewellery Show, where De Beers was showcasing the technology to industry participants.
