Botswana has partnered with the G7 diamond technical team to establish an export certification node by 2025, aiming to enhance traceability and transparency in its diamond trade with G7 markets.
“Botswana is committed to pioneering traceability and responsible mining practices, ensuring that our diamonds not only shine in beauty but also embody integrity and ethical stewardship,” said Duma Boko, President of Botswana.
The certification platform builds on a framework developed by Botswana and Belgium in early 2024 and follows the launch of Europe’s first rough diamond origin verification node in March 2024.
According to the European Union, this certification initiative will strengthen investor confidence in Botswana’s diamond sector and stimulate further investment across the country’s value chain.
The G7 technical team also plans to collaborate with other African diamond-producing nations, including Angola and Namibia, to establish additional certification nodes.
Namibia’s Minister of Mines and Energy, Tom Alweendo, welcomed the initiative, emphasizing its importance in preventing trade disruptions between African markets and G7 countries.
Alweendo also highlighted Namibia’s dedication to integrating these new certification systems with the existing Kimberley Process Certification Scheme to improve transparency and accountability in the global diamond trade.
