Angola Launches Chiri Mining JV as Endiama and Rio Tinto Begin Diamond Exploration in Lunda Sul
Angola’s state-owned Endiama and global mining company Rio Tinto have officially launched the Chiri Mining Company, a joint venture that will carry out diamond prospecting and exploration in the Lunda Sul province.
The company was formally established during a ceremony attended by Angola’s Minister of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo, marking a new phase in the country’s diamond sector development.
New exploration partnership
The Chiri Mining Company will focus on exploring and developing diamond resources in Lunda Sul, a region known for its mineral potential.
The venture brings together Endiama and Rio Tinto through a strategic partnership aimed at expanding Angola’s diamond output.
The agreement was signed by senior representatives from both companies, including Endiama Chairman Ganga Júnior, Executive Director Ana Feijó, and Rio Tinto Angola General Director Canga Xiaquivuila.
Government priorities and local development
Minister Azevedo described the project as a key milestone for Angola’s mining sector, highlighting efforts to make the industry more structured, transparent, and development-focused.
He said the initiative is intended not only to increase production but also to deliver broader social and economic benefits, including job creation, workforce training, and infrastructure development in mining communities.
Lunda Sul provincial governor Gildo Matias, who also attended the ceremony, said the project reflects growing confidence in Angola’s diamond subsector and praised the inclusion of local youth in mining activities.
Strategic industry goals
Endiama Chairman Ganga Júnior stated that the partnership aims to strengthen Angola’s position as one of the world’s leading diamond producers, with ambitions to become the second largest globally over time.
Rio Tinto representatives described the venture as a symbol of collaboration, progress, and long-term investment confidence in Angola’s mining sector, despite global challenges facing the diamond industry.
The Chiri Mining Company is expected to support Angola’s broader strategy of increasing mineral output while ensuring that mining activities contribute more directly to national development and local communities in producing regions.
