Cabinda Refinery Prepares for Petroleum Production After Ministry Inspection
A delegation from the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas conducted an inspection in the province of Cabinda on Monday, evaluating the commissioning of equipment at the local refinery ahead of the imminent start of petroleum derivatives production.
The delegation was led by Secretary of State for Petroleum and Gas José Alexandre Barroso, who met with Cabinda’s provincial governor, Suzana de Abreu, during the visit.
Barroso described the mission as a routine technical visit aimed at coordinating with contractors and operators of the Cabinda Refinery in preparation for the first phase of production.
Barroso also announced that at the end of March, the Minister of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas would visit Cabinda to provide detailed information regarding the start of refined petroleum production at the facility.
The delegation included technical experts from the oil and gas sector, the Petroleum Derivatives Regulatory Institute, and Sonangol.
According to data from the ministry reviewed by ANGOP, the refinery’s storage tanks were already filled with crude oil, with only minor technical adjustments remaining for the processing of diesel, heavy fuel oil, and naphtha.
Inaugurated in September 2025 by President João Lourenço, the Cabinda Refinery has a total refining capacity of 60,000 barrels of oil per day, with the initial phase projected to process 30,000 barrels daily.
This facility is the first refinery built in Angola after national independence and represents a key step in the government’s strategic policies to strengthen domestic resource transformation, advance energy sovereignty, and support long-term industrial development.
