Angola Launches Ndungu Field Production, Targeting 60,000 bpd at Peak Output
National Agency of Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG) and Azule Energy have announced the start of full field development at the Ndungu field offshore Angola, marked by the commencement of production from its first three wells.
According to ANPG, the milestone represents a significant step forward in the Agogo West Hub Integrated Development (AIWH), a project designed to maximize hydrocarbon recovery in the western area of Block 15/06.
The Ndungu and Agogo fields form the core components of this integrated offshore development.
Ownership and Development Scope
Block 15/06 is operated by Azule Energy with a 36.84% working interest, in partnership with Sonangol E&P (36.84%) and Sinopec International (26.32%).
The Ndungu phase represents the second stage of the broader hub development and is expected to materially strengthen Angola’s offshore production capacity.
Located approximately 10 kilometers from the Ngoma FPSO in water depths of about 1,100 meters, the full Ndungu development comprises seven production wells and four injection wells. At peak, the field is projected to produce up to 60,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd).
Tieback Strategy and Production Ramp-Up
Initial output from Ndungu will be tied back to existing subsea infrastructure at the West Hub and processed via the FPSO Ngoma.
This configuration enables early monetization of reserves ahead of a planned future migration to the FPSO Agogo.
The startup comes just six months after first oil from FPSO Agogo, underscoring what project stakeholders describe as efficient execution and coordinated delivery across reservoir management, drilling, project engineering, and offshore operations teams.
Strategic Impact
ANPG Chairman Paulino Jerónimo stated that the milestone reflects disciplined investment in Angola’s natural resources and reinforces collaboration between the regulator and operating companies to optimize production and build national capacity.
Azule Energy CEO Joseph Murphy added that with Ndungu now online, the Agogo West Hub is progressing toward full operational potential.
Combined peak production from the Agogo and Ndungu fields is expected to reach approximately 175,000 bpd, further consolidating Angola’s position as a leading deepwater producer in sub-Saharan Africa.
The Ndungu startup marks another key step in Angola’s strategy to sustain offshore output through phased, infrastructure-led developments in mature and emerging deepwater blocks.
