Nigeria’s NNPC Moves to Restart Idle Refineries, Eyes Reduced Fuel Imports and Export Potential
Nigeria’s state-owned oil company, NNPC Ltd, is engaging both technical and equity partners to restart three of its long-idle refineries, despite previous major investments that failed to restore operations, according to the company’s chief executive.
With a combined processing capacity of 445,000 barrels per day, the refineries—when fully operational alongside the Dangote Refinery—could significantly reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported fuel and position the country as a net exporter of petroleum products.
NNPC CEO Bayo Ojulari stated on X (formerly Twitter) that the company is focused on ensuring the refineries operate efficiently. He added that a comprehensive review process is currently underway, with implementation expected to follow soon.
Former NNPC head Mele Kyari had previously pursued international collaborations after securing $2.5 billion in refinery rehabilitation contracts.
However, the facilities remain inactive as the government continues to face challenges in divesting non-performing assets and improving refinery efficiency.
