Sonamet Targets Namibia as Part of Regional Expansion Strategy
Angolan oil and gas fabrication company Sonamet is setting its sights on regional growth, with Namibia emerging as a top priority for expansion.
The company aims to extend its proven expertise and infrastructure beyond Angola to strengthen its footprint across southern Africa.
According to Sandro Ferreira, Sonamet’s Marketing and Commercial Director, the company is actively engaging with the Namibian government and public institutions to explore investment opportunities and favorable conditions.
“We are currently in discussions to establish a competitive presence through tax incentives and free zones,” said Ferreira. “Expanding into Namibia will allow us to better serve neighboring countries while leveraging the infrastructure and experience we’ve built in Angola.”
Sonamet has a strong track record in Angola’s oil and gas sector, having contributed to several major offshore developments.
Among its notable achievements is its work on TotalEnergies’ CLOV Phase 3 project, where Sonamet supported the development through its state-of-the-art spool base facility.
“The spool base was designed to meet the technical challenges of modern offshore projects,” Ferreira explained. He also emphasized Sonamet’s collaboration with Subsea 7, noting that this partnership was crucial to ensuring the project’s timely and efficient delivery.
The company also played a pivotal role in Chevron’s Sanha Lean Gas Connection Project, constructing the jacket, deck, and booster compressors. “We are pioneers in Angola for shallow-water project fabrication,” Ferreira added, underscoring Sonamet’s capacity for technically complex engineering work.
Beyond infrastructure, local content development remains a cornerstone of Sonamet’s operations. The company maintains a workforce composed of more than 70% Angolan nationals and continues to invest heavily in training and skills transfer.
“In Namibia, we aim to replicate this model by integrating local talent into our operations,” said Ferreira. “We have already trained 30 Namibian welders and pipe fitters, ensuring that knowledge transfer remains central to our regional expansion.”
With its focus on sustainable growth, local empowerment, and regional collaboration, Sonamet is positioning itself as a key player in driving the next phase of oil and gas development across southern Africa.
