Sonangol Launches Angola’s First Electric Vehicle Charging Station at Kilamba Kiaxi to Drive Sustainable Mobility

Angola’s journey toward sustainable mobility has taken a major step forward with the inauguration of the country’s first electric vehicle (EV) charging station.

Opened by Sonangol at its Kilamba Kiaxi gas station in Luanda, the project is part of the company’s broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions, encourage technological innovation, and support the nation’s energy transition.

According to Sonangol, the new station integrates seamlessly into its national network of service stations, providing modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly refueling options for Angola’s growing EV market.

At the opening ceremony, Jorge Vinhas, Sonangol’s administrator, emphasized that the station represents a significant strengthening of Angola’s infrastructure.

“By supporting emissions reduction and enhancing quality of life, electric mobility is becoming a crucial factor for the competitiveness of cities,” he said. “It contributes to cleaner air, reduced noise, and smarter traffic management.”

Manuel Barros, CEO of SNL G&ER, highlighted the station’s unique features, noting that it is powered by 210 photovoltaic solar panels and equipped with an energy storage system exceeding 387 kilowatt-hours (kWh). “We are proud to mark this milestone just six months after construction began,” Barros added.

The inauguration was attended by prominent figures including Manuel Xavier from the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas (MIREMPET); Luis Fernandes, Director of the Petroleum Derivatives Regulatory Institute; as well as corporate leaders, local authorities, and industry partners.

Sonangol stated that the initiative represents “an important step toward meeting the needs of Angola’s emerging electric vehicle market,” offering drivers a modern, efficient, and environmentally responsible alternative for refueling their vehicles.

This milestone marks a significant stride toward Angola’s vision of cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable transport infrastructure.
