Dubai Police Arrest Suspects and Recover $25 Million Pink Diamond in High-Stakes Heist
Dubai Police successfully intercepted an attempted theft of a 21.25-carat pink diamond valued at $25 million, responding swiftly after the victim reported the crime.
Acting on a tip, authorities arrested three suspects within eight hours of the jeweler notifying them and recovered the diamond before it could be smuggled out of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), according to a post on Dubai Police’s X account on Monday.
The suspects, all of Asian nationality, had spent over a year planning the heist, which was codenamed “Operation Pink Diamond.”
The plot involved posing as intermediaries for a wealthy buyer. The group rented luxury vehicles, booked five-star hotels, and even employed a certified gem expert to convince the jeweler to remove the diamond from secure storage for a viewing.
Police from the General Department of Criminal Investigations used advanced surveillance and tracking technologies to locate and apprehend the suspects after they split up and hid in different locations. Authorities found the diamond concealed inside a small refrigerator, ready to be transported abroad.
The merchant, who had imported the gem from Europe, commended the rapid police response, highlighting that officers arrived within minutes of his call and kept him informed throughout the operation.
