Agogo FPSO Begins Oil Production in Angola with 450M-Barrel Reserves

Agogo FPSO Begins Oil Production in Angola with 450M-Barrel Reserves

Angola Launches Production at Agogo FPSO, Aims for 175,000 Barrels/Day with First Carbon-Neutral Offshore Facility

Angola’s Agogo Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) unit has officially commenced oil production, marking a significant milestone in the country’s energy sector.

The project—operated by Azule Energy in partnership with Sonangol P&P and Sinopec International—is part of the larger Agogo Integrated West Hub (IWH) Project in Block 15/06 offshore Angola.

With estimated reserves of 450 million barrels and a peak production target of 175,000 barrels per day, the Agogo FPSO is expected to become a key contributor to Angola’s national oil output. The project will develop two major fields—Agogo and Ndungu—using two FPSOs: the newly launched Agogo FPSO and the existing Ngoma FPSO.

In a joint statement, Angola’s National Agency of Petroleum, Gas, and Biofuels (ANPG) and Azule Energy announced the successful start of production on Tuesday, calling the milestone a testament to innovation, sustainability, and Angolan talent.

“This new milestone reinforces our belief in the importance of technological innovation and the valorization of Angola’s natural resources,” said Paulino Jerónimo, Chairman of ANPG.

“Notably, 80% of the workforce involved in the project is Angolan. Additionally, the FPSO is designed to reduce carbon emissions, aligning with our energy transition goals.”

Azule Energy CEO Adriano Mongini emphasized the strategic significance of the project for the company.

“The launch of the Agogo IWH project, approved just months after Azule Energy was established, reflects our technical capabilities and strong commitment to Angola’s energy future. It also highlights our leadership in responsible energy practices through pioneering carbon-reduction initiatives.”

The Agogo project was approved in February 2023, and production began in just 29 months, setting a benchmark for efficiency and execution speed in the oil and gas industry.

According to ANPG, this was made possible by a phased development strategy that allowed appraisal and execution activities to run in parallel, significantly reducing risk.

The project has been a massive undertaking, involving over 40 million man-hours across more than 15 countries.

Azule Energy credits this achievement to a coordinated organizational model and internal expertise in reservoir management, engineering, and procurement.

World’s First Carbon-Neutral FPSO
The Agogo FPSO also distinguishes itself as a pioneering “green” offshore facility, featuring:

Fully electric topside and offshore systems

A pilot-scale Carbon Capture and Storage (CCUS) unit—a first in both Angola and the world

Combined cycle power generation technology

Carbon offset initiatives, supporting its carbon-neutral operational footprint

“At a time when reducing carbon emissions is a global priority, Agogo sets a new standard by introducing the world’s first carbon-neutral FPSO,” the ANPG highlighted.

In a separate development, ANPG also announced the start of production at CLOV Phase 3, a satellite project in Block 17 operated by TotalEnergies in partnership with Equinor, ExxonMobil, Azule Energy, and Sonangol E&P. The new phase is expected to add 30,000 barrels per day to Angola’s total production.

These twin milestones—Agogo FPSO and CLOV Phase 3—mark a resurgence in Angola’s offshore oil activity, blending high-volume production with sustainability and innovation.
