Rhino Resources Launches Volans-1X Well in Namibia’s Offshore PEL 85 to Advance Oil Exploration
Rhino Resources Ltd has commenced drilling its third exploration well, Volans-1X, in Namibia’s offshore Orange Basin under Petroleum Exploration Licence 85 (PEL 85).
The Volans-1X well is part of the company’s ongoing effort to deepen geological understanding of the PEL 85 block and follows two previous successful exploration campaigns.
The first well, Sagittarius-1X, was spudded on 18 December 2024 and reached total depth by 6 February 2025.
It intersected a hydrocarbon-bearing reservoir with no water contact, confirming the presence of active petroleum systems within the block.
The second well, Capricornus-1X, drilled in February 2025, tested light oil production exceeding 11,000 barrels per day, with approximately 38 metres of net pay, minimal gas, and no water contact—indicating a strong commercial prospect.
“With the Volans-1X exploration well, Rhino and our partners are strategically advancing our understanding of PEL 85’s potential,” said CEO Travis Smithard.
He also highlighted Rhino’s commitment to local content: “We’re proud to deliver another well in Namibia, sourcing all associated construction services and equipment locally.”
Smithard emphasized that the company remains focused on safety, operational excellence, and environmental stewardship as it progresses with its third consecutive offshore well.
The drilling of Volans-1X marks another important step in unlocking the hydrocarbon potential of Namibia’s Orange Basin, which has rapidly emerged as a frontier for offshore oil exploration in Africa.
