Cameroon Launches New Oil Refinery and Petroleum Depot in Kribi to Reduce Fuel Imports
Cameroon has officially launched the construction of a new oil refinery and petroleum storage depot in its southern region, marking a major step toward enhancing energy independence. The announcement was made by the state-owned National Hydrocarbons Corporation (SNH).
The project is being developed within the Kribi industrial port zone, a strategic location selected for its infrastructure and proximity to maritime transport.
Speaking on behalf of the Executive General Manager during the inauguration ceremony, SNH representative Nathalie Moudiki highlighted the facility’s importance, noting that it will feature a large-capacity fuel storage system designed to support national demand.
According to SNH, the refinery will process domestically produced crude oil and significantly reduce Cameroon’s reliance on imported fuel—an issue that has strained the country’s energy supply since 2019.
Construction is expected to take over a year. Once operational, the refinery will become the country’s second such facility.
Cameroon’s only existing refinery, located in Limbe, has been out of service since it was severely damaged by a fire, forcing the nation to depend almost entirely on fuel imports.
The new refinery project is seen as a critical investment in national energy infrastructure, aimed at stabilizing fuel supply, improving energy security, and boosting the local economy.
