QatarEnergy has secured exploration rights for oil and gas in Algeria, marking its entry into the country’s upstream sector through the 2024 Algeria Bid Round.
The announcement was made by ALNAFT, Algeria’s national agency responsible for hydrocarbon resource management.
The Ahara Block was awarded to a consortium comprising QatarEnergy (24.5%), TotalEnergies (24.5%, also designated as the operator during the exploration phase), and Algeria’s state-owned Sonatrach (51%).
QatarEnergy’s President and CEO, H.E. Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, welcomed the development, highlighting it as a significant step in expanding the company’s footprint in Africa’s energy sector.
He expressed gratitude to the Algerian Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, as well as to ALNAFT, for facilitating a successful bidding process.
Al-Kaabi also emphasized QatarEnergy’s commitment to working closely with Sonatrach, TotalEnergies, and Algerian authorities throughout the exploration phase.
The Ahara Block is located in eastern Algeria, strategically positioned between the prolific Berkine and Illizi Basins.
Covering approximately 14,900 square kilometers, it represents a promising opportunity for future hydrocarbon discoveries.
