AXIAN Energy Breaks Ground on West Africa’s Largest Solar-Storage Project in Senegal

AXIAN Energy has commenced construction of the NEA Kolda project, a large-scale solar and battery storage facility aimed at advancing Senegal’s renewable energy objectives.

Launched on May 22 in the southern Kolda region, the hybrid plant will generate 60 megawatts of solar power and store up to 72 megawatt-hours of energy.

Once operational, it is expected to supply clean electricity to more than 25,000 households, benefiting nearly 235,000 people.

AXIAN positions the project as part of its broader commitment to an inclusive and locally impactful energy transition.

The development has secured over €105 million in funding, including €84 million in loans from major financial institutions such as the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF), the Dutch development bank FMO, and DEG—the German Development Finance Institution.

Originally announced in November 2024, the NEA Kolda project is set to become West Africa’s largest solar-plus-storage complex. In April 2025, AXIAN awarded the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract to Voltalia and Entech Smart Energies.

The project aligns with Senegal’s national energy strategy, which aims to achieve full electrification, up from the current rate of 84%, and reinforces the country’s commitment to sustainable development through renewable energy expansion.
